Every generation is experiencing huge shifts in wh Every generation is experiencing huge shifts in what passes for a natural system. These changes have become more extreme over the last few generations. What we see as almost dead landscapes, our kids will perceive as natural and normal. There is a phrase for this and most of us these days suffer from it. It’s called ‘Shifting Baseline Syndrome’. The term was first coined by a researcher who used it to describe fishermen’s baselines for healthy fish populations. (Daniel Pauly, 1995)

“Generational amnesia is when knowledge is not passed down from generation to generation. For example, people may think of as ‘pristine’ wilderness, the wild places that they experienced during their childhood, but with every generation this baseline becomes more and more degraded”. Dr. E.J. Milner-Gulland
My dream is that the concept of treating your patc My dream is that the concept of treating your patch of this planet as an outdoor room will become a thing of the past and that everyone who is awake and aware of the crisis we are in, will turn at least some of their gardens into Arks and create a wave of change and empowerment that will build and build into a roaring tsunami of life. Build an Ark, not a garden. Give at least half of any land under your care back to nature. If not half, as much as you can spare. 🌎❤️
The earth is a living organism, made up of million The earth is a living organism, made up of millions of species all working together in harmonious and often mysterious ways. These are the threads of life. They support each other, control each other, nourish each other. Each of these threads that we remove in our efforts to continue to grow exponentially and expand our interests and greed, has a knock-on effect on the rest of the web.
We do not know when we will remove a thread that is holding it all together. We may already have done that. The tipping points may well have tipped already. The only reason we get to live here on this paradise that we call ‘Earth’, is if the planet can continue to support us with clean air, water and food
But lingering without reason in my heart, there is still hope. Having worked with land for as long as I have, one thing I know is that nature recovers quickly. All it takes, is for us to set her free, free to restore her systems of life and protect and support her while she recovers. #giveitback #wearetheark
Trees as water filters. Every chemical we create Trees as water filters.
Every chemical we create in the pharmaceutical industry ends up in the water. From spitting toothpaste down the sink, to the micro-plastics now found absolutely everywhere, to peeing out hormones from contraceptives. Everything eventually ends up in our drinking water. Even the most modern water treatment facilities can’t handle removing the really toxic chemicals such as PCB’s, fluoride compounds and the sex hormones, so these continue to build up in the water. It can’t be good for any human or other species to drink small levels of chemicals and medications every day.

Our tree family have the unique ability to pull water in through their leaves and up through their roots to release it as oxygen and water vapour, in a process called the water cycle. But the magic happens in between. They process and filter out all those nasty chemicals, including the sex hormones. Then the magical microorganisms and bacteria that work in partnership with the trees break the harmful chemicals down into their constituent elements. These can once again be released and recycled causing no more harm. This environmentally sound system for pollution prevention and control is known as phytoremediation.

We need to protect every single tree we have already and plant or allow nature to grow trillions more native trees, in order to survive the chemical warfare we have inflicted upon the earth, upon ourselves.
