Plants have brilliant defence mechanisms which deter insects from eating them. Insects have focused over millennia on becoming immune to the chemicals in certain plants. 90 % of insects still only eat the plants they have evolved alongside. They cannot survive on plants imported from foreign shores that they haven’t adapted to at all. Sadly, our gardens and landscaping supply stores are filled with non-native plants which sever the food web and many have become invasive species, disrupting local ecosystems and causing havoc in wild habitats.

A wildlife pond provides life support to a huge range of creatures. I dug this pond last year in my Ark and apart from the city of tadpoles around every edge, there are wonderful wild footprints/tracks in the clay edges every day. Today there were heron tracks, drawn in by the wealth of tadpoles I imagine.
